WebDAV hosting
WebDAV is an Internet Engineering Task Force working group. It is an acronym for Web based Distributed Authoring and
Versioning. The term WebDAV is usually used for referring to the protocol, precisely the extension to the HTTP protocol which the group usually defines. Distributed Authoring and Versioning allows the users to treat the web site directory at the host almost as if it is a local directory with the right kind of softwares. The users can also tag versions of the documents so that a backup to a previous version of the page can be put up more smoothly.
WebDAV hosting provides the necessary functionality to develop, change as also move the documents on a remote server, which is typically a web server. This turns out to be useful for the authoring of the documents that the web server serves. It can also be utilised for general web based storage of files, which can be accessed from almost anywhere. Most of the operating systems that are available at present provide a built in support for WebDAV hosting, which makes it very easy to use the files on a WebDAV server as if they have been stored in a local directory.
WebDAV hosting enjoys a support through the 'Web Disk' feature of the control panel which is usually built in. The control panel Web
Disk allows the user to connect easily to the web site and allows for the drag and drop file transfers. Once the user is connected to the server, the WebDisk appears as an additional drive within the local file system which gives the user the ability to manage the remote files as the user would manage the files on the local machine without making use of an FTP client. The user can also connect to the primary control panel Web Disk by using the main control panel username and password or can create additional Web Disks and limit access to the specific directories.
Control Panel Web Disk setup is very quick and easy. There is no need for any technical knowledge and even beginners can do it very easily. All the user needs to do is go to the control panel Web Disk and enter a login id and a password and set the directory for that particular WebDisk. The Control Panel generates the connection scripts automatically for the Mac, Windows and Linux platforms and the users can load the WebDisk by just clicking it.
Steps to be followed to configure WebDAV service in the control panel:
- The user needs to login to the control panel and click the Web Disk icon.
- The Access Web Disk button then needs to be clicked after scrolling down.
- The operating system that is used on the personal computer needs to be selected.
- Then the Go button has to be hit.
- Click on the Save button.
- Then on the computer hit Open and then Run the software.
- The user can now view the web site files from the personal computer.
